The BA Hosts NAMES 1st General Assembly Meeting

The BA is organizing the North Africa and Middle East Science Centers Network (NAMES) First General Assembly Meeting, 2-3 November 2008. NAMES aims to promote best practices to support effective communication and to strengthen the position of science centers within the community.
The theme of the Assembly Meeting is “The Role of Science Centers in Establishing Knowledge-Based Societies in the Region”. The Sub-themes to be tackled in parallel sessions and workshops will be “Networking and Advocacy” and “Effective Non-Traditional Methods of Science Communication”.
Eminent speakers in the Meeting will include Dr. Hany Helal, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Dr. Yousry El-Gamal, Egyptian Minister of Education; Mohamed Hassan, Head, African Academy of Science (AAS) and Executive Director, Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS); Dr. Farouk ElBaz, Director, Center for Remote Sensing, Boston University; Dr. Mohamed Alswaiyel, King Abdul-Aziz City of Science and Technology; and Prof. Ridha Methnani, Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Technology.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin will give a lecture entitled “Islamic Civilization and Science”, in which he will speak on Islamic scholars and their role in entrenching the pillars of Islamic civilization and their contributions to humanity at large in the field of science. Participants from Arab Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, India, Italy, Malaysia, North Africa, Mexico, Portugal, Sudan, and United States of America will also attend the Meeting.
The Meeting is held under the auspices of the Middle East Science Fund, which was launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, at the Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates in June 2008.
Based in Jordan under the umbrella of King Abdullah II Fund for Development, the Fund supports scientific projects in the Middle East and aims to support projects outside the borders of the country; to achieve progress in a number of scientific areas. The Fund also supports meetings held between scientists from various universities and research institutions, which NAMES is considered one of them.
