HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak hands out Certificates of Completion of the Conflict Resolution Course at the BA

Alexandria— Her Excellency the First Lady of Egypt Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, President of the Institute for Peace Studies (IPS), attended on Wednesday, 6 August 2008, the celebration marking the end of the IPS academic courses for the year 2008, along with Mrs. Fayza Abu El Naga, Minister of International Cooperation; Dr. Hany Helal, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria; and General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria.

Mrs. Mubarak gave an address, in which she stated that peace studies are no longer a branch of political and social sciences, but today it is considered an important science that requires scientific analysis and academic study to identify and understand the nature and foundation of peace. She maintained that the study of peace includes the analysis of elements, which help achieve peace and support it, as well as the factors impeding and threatening peace and how to overcome them.

Mrs. Mubarak added that the establishment of the BA Institute for Peace Studies (IPS), the first of its kind in the Arab World, is based on objective analysis of lessons and experiences derived from the history of nations, and the need to keep up with modern scientific development in international universities and institutes. She also pointed out that the Institute, which was established three years ago, gained an excellent status inside and outside Egypt, at the level of public opinion and academia mediators. In the conclusion of her speech, Mrs. Mubarak congratulated the participants, who were keen to be part of the BA’s Institute for Peace Studies courses for the year 2008.

Mrs. Mubarak handed out certificates to the 99 participants in the course, some of whom work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Council for Human Rights, and others work as university professors, lawyers, legal experts.

Ambassador Ali Maher, Director, Institute for Peace Studies (IPS), expressed his gratitude to the participation of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, President of the Institute, in the celebration. He said that “the BA Institute for Peace Studies and its staff are all honored that Mrs. Mubarak participated in this celebration, not only because HE is the Chairperson of the Institute's Board of Directors, but because she is the founder and the driving force behind its launch, until it became a scientific academy that serves our society and supports noble principles”.
