The BA Commemorates Mahmoud Darwish One Year After His Death

Alexandria— The BA organizes on Sunday, 9 August 2009, an event commemorating the Palestinian Poet Mahmoud Darwish one year after his death. Mahmoud Darwish (13 March 1941 – 9 August 2008) is one of the pioneers of modern Arab poetry and was regarded as the Palestinian national poet. Distinguished Egyptian poets and critics will participate in the event.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, will give an opening speech, followed by an address by Ahmed Abdel Moety Hegazy, on behalf of all Egyptian poets. Mourid Al-Barghouti will recite eulogy on behalf of all Palestinian poets and the session will be moderated by Fouad Taman.

Entitled “The Poetic Experience of Mahmoud Darwich Locally and Internationally” and moderated by Mohamed Rafik Khaleel, the first appraisal session of Darwish’s works hosts Dr. Ahmed Darwish, Dr. Fawzy Eissa, and Hemeeda Abd Allah as speakers.

The second session discussing factors affecting Mahmoud Darwish poetic experience will be moderated by Dr. Abdel Aziz Mowafy. Speakers will be Helmy Salem, Dr. Mohamed Zakaria Anany, and Dr. Hossam Akl.

The event is concluded at 9:00 pm by a concert by Mohamed Abdel Mohsen performing the most famous songs by Mahmoud Darwish, accompanied by Yasser Hegazy (Oud), Samer Hegazy (Piano), and Wael Abou Okal (Percussion); and recitals of Darwish’s poems by Ahmed Abdel Moety Hegazy, Helmy Salem, Fouad Taman, Hemeeda Abd Allah, and Omar Hazek.
