The Euromed Summit at the BA

Alexandria— The BA witnessed on Sunday, 18 October 2009, the opening of the Euromed Summit of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions, organized by the European Economic and Social Committee(EESC). The Summit was held with a support from the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Ministry, in cooperation with the BA, and the Egyptian Federation for Non-Governmental Organizations.

The Opening Ceremony was attended by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria; General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria; Iren Pari, Vice President of the European Economic and Social Committee; Dr. Abdel Aziz Hegazy, President of the Egyptian Federation of NGOs; Mohamed Abul Einen, Head of the Industry and Energy Committee at the Egyptian Parliament, and Vice President of the Euromed Parliamentary Association; Ambassador Hamdy Loza, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abul Ghait; Dr. Aly El-Moselhy, Minister of Social Solidarity; and Ambassador Morin Kärre, Ambassador of Sweden to Egypt, as a representative of the European Union (EU).

Participants in the Summit also include representatives of NGOs in the 27 EU member states, and the 16 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean Initiative, in addition to representatives of Egyptian, European and international organizations.

The Summit focused on empowering civil society activities in the Union for the Mediterranean initiative. It also discussed economic and social repercussions of the Financial Crisis on the Euromed region, in addition to climate change.

It is worth mentioning that the resolutions of the Euromed Summit of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions would be the backbone of the Ministerial Meeting of the Union of the Mediterranean, taking place in Istanbul on 24 and 25 November 2009.
