Inauguration of the Suez Canal Conference and Suez Canal Exhibition.

Alexandria 12 December, 2005— Today marked the inauguration of the Suez Canal Conference held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The conference was started off by Dr. Ismail Serageldin (Librarian of Alexandria; Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina), Eng. ElSayed Zakareya ElSaaty (member of the Authoritative Council of the Canal), M. Arnaud Ramière (Vice President of the Association of De Lesseps), whom all gave a brief history of the Suez Canal, its importance and the economic role it plays.

Dr. Youssef Ziedan (Director of the Manuscripts Department) also gave a brief lecture comparing the Suez Canal to the "Silk Road" and the internet (http://www.ess.uci.edu/~oliver/silk.html) in an attempt to define them all as vessels used to transport culture and facilitate commerce.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina also seized the opportunity to launch a 2 volume CD-Rom about the Suez Canal.

The inauguration was also accompanied by the opening of the Suez Canal Exhibition which was officially opened by Dr. Ismail Serageldin immediately after Dr. Ziedan’s lecture.
