Future City Competition
09 September 2007

“Future City” is an international competition held during the National Engineers Week in the United States of America. It aims to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program while combining a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present students’ visions of a city of the future.

“Future City” Competition focuses attention on 12-14 year old students to become future great scientists, inventors, and engineers. The Competition requires participating students to use their creativity, ingenuity, and above all, their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to perform specific projects:

  • To design the city using software that helps students to better build this city and meet the needed criteria.
  • To construct a scale model of a city as it might exist at least 100 years from now. Not a pie-in-the-sky fairyland but a “real” Future City that applies student-envisioned scientific and technological breakthroughs to meet its citizens’ needs.
  •  To give a presentation discussing their Future City and its amenities. The purpose of the presentation is to concisely describe specific design issues, features, and key aspects of the Future City.

This year, the “Future City” competition has been organized by the Library of Alexandria and the IEEE Egypt under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Education. The finals were held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center (BACC) on 9 September 2007 with the presence of Dr. Yousry El Gamal, Egyptian Minister of Education, Eng. Hoda Elmikaty, Director of the Planetarium Science Center Bibliotheca Alexandrina; and Dr. Said Al Khamy, Director of IEEE Alexandria sector.

There were seven participating schools across Egypt and they have all presented outstanding projects about the future city they have imagined. The team who finally won the competition was from Alexandria - Sidi Gaber Language School (SLS).
