Alice Hamilton was responsible for the surveys of lead use. She identified 578 cases of lead related illness of which 14 were associated with temporary disability, 9 with permanent disability, and 18 terminating in death. Her work on the Illinois Commission and her growing international recognition, led to her recruitment by the federal government to conduct a nation-wide survey of industrial lead use as well as other toxic chemicals.
