The BA Launches the Arabic Version of Women in an Insecure World on the Occasion of Its Fifth Anniversary

On the occasion of its fifth anniversary on 23-24 October 2007, the BA launches the Arabic version of Women in an Insecure World…Violence against Women: Facts, Figures and Analysis issued by the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF). The book was launched at the BA in 2006, in conjunction with the inauguration of the Institute for Peace Studies hosted at the BA. The translation of the book reflects a keen interest of the BA, in general, and the Dialogue Forum, in specific, in two crucial issues: women and peace. The Arabic version of the report will be launched at the "1000 Peace Women” event , in the presence of HE. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak.
Raising the slogan "no gender-based discrimination", this daring book is a cry before the world conscience to unveil the violence and injustice to which women are exposed. The book, classified as an intellectual encyclopedia, is not limited to describing and precise monitoring of all forms of violence against women around the world, it also calls for the involvement of the society at large in putting an end to violence against women; and presents a set of recommendations in the form of a plan of action for stakeholders, especially the civil society.
The forward to the Arabic version was written by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak , Chairman of Women’s International Peace Movement, who considered the book a major step on a long tiring path towards a secure world for women, a world free from all forms of gender-based violence. She added that this goal might seem distant and complicated, yet possible being an ethical commitment to men and women equally.
In the preface of this valuable report, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, referred to the fact that women form the majority of war and armed conflict victims, in addition to their exposure to all forms of violence, especially domestic violence. He added that the report tackles the violation of some countries to human rights, and the transgressions of those systems to both men and women.
