2nd MENA Educational Institute for Responsible Science

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, announces the call for applications for the 2nd MENA Educational Institute on Responsible Science.

The Institute will take place at the headquarters of TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences, in Trieste, ITALY, 7-13 May 2014. Following in the steps of the 1st Educational Institute that took place in Aqaba, Jordan, in September 2012* this second Institute aims to strengthen the network of faculty in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region who can apply active learning pedagogical techniques to teach about responsible science and research with dual use potential.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be faculty/university staff, who have been working and living in Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco or Yemen who should apply in teams of 2-3 preferably from the same academic/research institution.
  • Applicants must stay for the entire institute from 7 to 13 May 2014.
  • Applicants must agree to use one or more of the instructional materials developed at the Institute in their teaching, preferably in the Fall semester 2014.
  • It is expected that one member/team will participate in the follow-up evaluation meeting during the academic year 2015.
The following documents MUST be submitted:

    1. Application form (Closed)
  • 2. Brief biographical sketch (one paragraph)
    3. Personal statement (no more than one-and-a-half pages) that includes:
    • a.Your interest in scientific teaching, and the type of courses you teach
    • b.What does "responsible science" mean for you
    • c.What you hope to achieve by attending the Institute
    • d.The names of individuals from your Institution who are also applying.
