International Workshop on Cities, Science and Sustainability
An international workshop examining successful approaches to Cities, Science and Sustainability will be held at TWAS's headquarters in Trieste, Italy, from 20 to 22 September 2007.

Institutions in developing countries are invited to respond by 1 July 2007 indicating their interest in participating in the workshop and presenting a report highlighting successful initiatives in using science and technology in solving problems of sustainability associated with large urban areas, including (but not limited to) access to safe drinking water, sanitation, air pollution, housing and construction, land use planning, transport, traffic congestion and waste disposal in a city in the developing world.

The project "Cities, Science and Sustainability" is a collaborative effort between TWAS, the Consortium for Science, Technology and Innovation for the South (COSTIS) and the United Nations Development Programme's Special Unit for South-South Cooperation (UNDP-SSC).

The Project will consist of 2 parts:

1) Each participant will prepare a case study report that will serve as the basis for discussions at the workshop. Case studies must be based on a city in a devoting country.
2) Following the workshop, and based on the recommendation of the advisory committee, authors will be expected to re-work their case studies, which will then be edited by the project staff before being published as part of the Sharing Innovative Experiences series of books produced by TWAS, UNDP-SSC and other partners. The book, which will present the best practices in non-technical language that can be referred to by decision makers interested in replicating experiences, will be distributed throughout the developing world and made available for downloading from the internet.

As a first step towards participation in the project, we request that you complete and return the proposal form obtainable here to costis@twas.org

The deadline for submissions is 1 July 2007.
