The African Union Celebrates the Outstanding Achievements of the Regional Women Scientists
On the 9th of September 2009, Africa commemorated the 10th anniversary of the African Union Day uniquely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On this day, Africa celebrated the outstanding achievements of the African Union Regional Women Scientists and Younger Researchers at National levels. The celebration took place in the African Union Headquarters, with the presence of several distinguished delegates.

The competitions were in the following thematic areas: Basic Science, Technology and Innovation and Earth and Life Sciences sectors.

It was clarified in the ceremony that the Regional Competitions were implemented by the Regional Economic Communities, while the Member States implemented the National Young Scientist Awards.

It is worth mentioning that amongst the the "Regional Jury Committee" members for the year 2009 was Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Director, Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), as well as other members including Prof. Abdoulaye Dia, Professor of University Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (NASAC); Dr. Rispah N. Oduwo, Chief Science Secretary National Council for S&T Ministry of Higher Education, Science & Technology; and Prof. Francis J. Mulaa, Associate Professor, University of Nairobi (AAS).

The women scientists were presented with a cash prize of 20,000 USD, a certificate and a trophy, while the younger researchers were awarded a prize of 5,000 USD.
