Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt.    In cooperation with The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World's-Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO), the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) will hold a seminar entitled "Water, Nuclear and Renewable Energy: Challenges Versus Opportunities". It intends to bring together leading experts to discuss challenges and opportunities of water, nuclear and renewable energy in the Arab region. 
   TWAS-ARO members and young affiliates, along with other eminent speakers, will provide an opportunity for a wide range of fruitful discussions and solution-oriented idea exchange to join together and embrace the future of water, nuclear and renewable energy in the Arab World.

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World’s-Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) is organizing a lecture entitled Egypt and the Nile Basin: Between Past, Present and Future, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Great Hall.

The Lecture will be presented by H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council and Former Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation. The Lecture aims at discussing the relations between Egypt and the Nile Basin countries and the current conventions and initiatives; it will also review the current Egyptian water situation, the Egyptian plan to face it, and the future requirements.

The Lecture will be in Arabic and open to the public.

 The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences in the Developing World, Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO), will organize a Public lecture entitled: "Nanotechnology, the Big Potential of the Very Small" .

The Lecture will be presented by Prof. Mostafa El-Sayed, Professor at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA who will shed light on the new materials that make man's daily life better using the Nano-Science.

The Lecture will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Conference Center, on 27 December 2011, at 15:00 pm.

Micro Research Grants Winners

On Monday, 26 September 2011, the two final MRG2010/2011 winners signed the contracts. The Ceremony was attended by Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Director of the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP); and Ms. Asmaa Soliman, Head of Scientific Activities Section. The Contracts were signed by the Mentors of both teams; Mr. Ayman Hafez Khamis and Dr. Mona Bakr Mohamed. The Winners were selected by a review committee comprised of two eminent advisors from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The Winners are:
•Abdel Rahman Gamal , Al-Azhar School.
 Project Title: Cotton Sterilizing Machine.
•Mahmoud Mohamed Badran & Badran Mohamed Badran, Brilliance international schools.
 Project Title: Fabrication of Solar Cell from Plants.

Science Supercourse

 Science Supercourse

Science Supercourse is a project jointly coordinated by Ismail SSC WebsiteSerageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Ronald Laporte, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh.

This effort was designed to improve information sharing among professionals and educators in four major fields of science: public health, agriculture, computer engineering, and environment. Lectures are shared in PowerPoint format to empower educators around the world.

The SSC is based on involving the community and encouraging professors and experts to participate by adding their own lectures to the website for the benefit of students and teachers everywhere.

Essential Skills for Brokering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

We sincerely regret to announce that the "Essential Skills for Brokering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships" workshop which was expected to be held during the period 23-26 January 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), has been CANCELLED.


UNESCO-TWAS Associateship Scheme

 UNESCO-TWAS Associateship Scheme

In collaboration with UNESCO and a number of centres of excellence in the South, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) has instituted a Joint Associateship Scheme to enable competent researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly. An associate is appointed for three years during which s/he can visit a selected centre twice for 2-3 months each time. Over 100 centres have been selected to participate in the Scheme.

TWAS provides travel support for the associates and a contribution towards subsistence costs up to USD 300 per month while living expenses are covered by the host centres.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree. Special consideration is given to scientists from isolated institutions in developing countries. Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

2012 Millennium Youth Camp in Finland

Technology Academy Finland and the Finnish Science Education Centre LUMA are going to organize the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp to be held in Finland.

During this camp, about 30 talented and young people from different parts of the world will meet for a week to work together on different projects on mathematics, science and technology. These young people will also get a chance to meet famous scientists as well as the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize Winner during this event.

The Leuphana University of Lueneburg will grant 10 Ph.D. Scholarships (1300 EURO monthly, up to 3 years) paid out of the EU-funded Innovation-Incubator and starting May 31, 2012 or, preferably, at an earlier date.
