The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is launching an event to celebrate International Museum Day on Monday, 18 May 2026. The event is titled “Alexandria… A Museum of Civilizations” and organized by the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med), the Antiquities Museum, and the Art Exhibitions and Collections Department, in collaboration with the Regional Authority for Tourism Promotion.
Since its launch in 1977, International Museum Day has established a cultural mission aimed at enriching cultural identity and strengthening international cooperation. This year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” underscores the vital role of museums in bridging cultures and transcending cultural, social, and geopolitical divides, serving as living platforms for dialogue, coexistence, and the consolidation of values of global peace.
The event features a heritage exhibition held in the Hall of Fame at the Library’s main entrance, showcasing a diverse collection of photographs and prints, as well as medals and decorations that document the rich history of the city of Alexandria.
The program also includes a screening of the promotional film The Story of Alexandria through the Ages, as well as the film Royal Treasures, which explores the history of the Royal Jewelry Museum. The screenings will be followed by two specialized lectures; the first takes attendees on an informative tour of Alexandria’s museums, while the second examines the role of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in preserving cultural heritage and supporting tourism development.
The event will conclude with a special participation of a number of social media influencers, who will highlight the city’s landmarks and its cultural and historical heritage.
It will take place at 2:00 pm in the Library’s Auditorium Hall.
