Dr. Maged Othman, former Minister of Communications and Information Technology and the CEO and Director of Baseera: The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research, will give a lecture titled “The Future of Social Justice in Egypt” as part of the “Future of Arab Societies: Changes and Challenges” Conference. The conference is organized by the BA Futuristic Studies Unit, and it is going to be held from 5 to 8 September 2016.

The lecture is set to take place on Monday, 5 September 2016 at 1:00 pm. In the lecture, Dr. Othman will discuss the strong connection between social justice and political stability, for social justice is only achievable when all members are provided with equal opportunities of social mobility and when discrimination against any member of the community is eradicated.

Dr. Othman will also present an analysis of social justice in the Egyptian community, based on two main aspects: the human capital and the social capital. The presented analysis will begin by examining the concept of identifying the various gaps inflicting the society, including financial, geographical, physical, and generational gaps.

He will also demonstrate the challenges hindering the process of achieving social justice. Additionally, he will present his suggestion that achieving any progress in this controversial issue depends on a number of comprehensive and unconventional policies, including decreasing the gap and differences in citizens’ fortunes and income, providing marginalized and endangered sects of the community with social and economic security, as well as eradicating social and cultural norms that foster discrimination.
