Lecture: “The Influence of Waqf on Education in Alexandria in the Ottoman Period”

The Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med) at the BA organizes a lecture entitled “The Influence of Waqf on Education in Alexandria in the Ottoman Period” on 29 November 2018, at 2:00 pm, in the Auditorium. It is delivered by Dr. Ayman Ahmed Mahmoud, Associate Professor of Modern History, Suez University, and Senior Researcher at the BA, and commented on by Dr. Mervat Assaad Atallah, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Education, Alexandria University.
This lecture comes as part of the first cultural season of the center that is titled “Alexandria, the cultural center for the dissemination of science and civilization in Egypt and the Mediterranean over the centuries.” It is also the last lecture of the first cultural season.
The lecture aims to study the role of Waqf in supporting scientific institutions in Alexandria in the Ottoman Period, since Alexandria was one of the most important Egyptian cities that witnessed a scientific and religious activity. Due to its geographical location, the city played a vital role as a station for pilgrims and traders from the Levant and Morocco. This led to a number of Moroccan students, scientists, scholars and Sufis enjoying a prominent place in the hearts of the city’s inhabitants, as a result of their contact with them.
