Alexandria— The BA Children’s and Young Peoples’ Libraries organized on Monday, 18 August 2008, a lecture entitled “The Positive and Negative Impact of Computer Games on Children”. The Lecture was given by Dr. Maysa El Nayal, Head of the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University.

Dr. El Nayal stated that computer games is considered a coin with two faces. It increases children’s ambitions as they try to move from a level to a higher one, and thereby increases their motivation to accomplish a certain task, in addition to the development of their personality, and their mental and emotional abilities.

Dr. El Nayal added that there are a number of negative aspects associated with computer games, as it consumes most of children’s time, which lead to the so-called alienation in the relationship between children and their parents, and thus negatively affecting the family at large, and contributes to the spread of violence and aggression caused by the attachment to theses games and the stress it imposes on children.

Dr. El Nayal said that to reduce the time spent by children at computers, parents should diversify their children's interests, and increase their interaction with their friends at school or with their family members. Parents should also choose games that are appropriate for their children, especially those to develop their thinking and ability to learn, and does not include conflicts or violence.
