The BA Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med), in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair on Underwater Cultural Heritage (Alexandria University) and Alexandria Center for Maritime Archaeology, with the participation of a group of national and international partners, is organizing a celebration to mark the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage and the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The event will take place on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at 9:30 am, at the BA Conference Center, Delegates Hall.
The celebration brings together a select group of representatives from governments, UNESCO, international organizations, universities, museums, and heritage institutions, as well as researchers, diver organizations, and cultural specialists, to review the Convention’s most significant achievements over the past quarter-century and discuss future priorities in an era marked by rapid technological advancements, climate change, and increasing pressures on the marine environment.
The celebration’s program includes official opening remarks, keynote lectures by a select group of international experts, specialized panel discussions, and documentary film screenings, as well as the adoption of the “Alexandria Declaration on Underwater Cultural Heritage.”
The event will also feature an exhibition celebrating the legacy of Honor Frost, one of the pioneers of maritime archaeology. The exhibition will be held in the Hall of Fame, BA Main Entrance.
