Alexandria—
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria and Dr. Mohamed Awad, Director of Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex-Med), inaugurated on Thursday, 27 September 2007, an artistic exhibition entitled "Alexandrian Faces".
The exhibition features paintings and artistic works by Alexandrian artist, Esmat Dawestashi; and Cypriot artist, Andreas Kareyan. The exhibition reflects the resemblance and connection between the peoples of the Mediterranean through a collection of portraits of men and women from Egypt, and specifically from Alexandria. The exhibition will last until 15 October 2007.
Kareyan draws faces of Alexandrian youth, working in different fields of life, to reflect the Hellenistic civilization dimension in Alexandria in the past and present. Dawestashi presents different Egyptian women faces, especially Alexandrian, in an attempt to combine between modernity, Egyptian identity, and folkloric heritage.
The exhibition is held as part of the Resident Artist Project, in which the New Library of Alexandria is following suite of the Ancient Library of Alexandria. The exhibition is held in cooperation between the BA Alex-Med and BA Arts Center.
