Music and Art at the BA

The Arts Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is hosting a program of international cultural activities from 20 July- 20 August 2004. The program includes music, dance, film and theatre from many countries including Iraq, Germany, Spain and Sweden.
From Iraq, the program features two oud concerts by Omar Bashir and Nasseir Shama, on 30 and 31 July, respectively. The Swedish entry on 27 July, is a dancing one entitled “The Waves” with Mary Magdalene in the leading role. The Egyptian play El-La’b fi al-Dimagh (Messing up one’s brain), an agit-prop play about the American invasion of Iraq, directed by Khaled Al Sawy, will be presented during the first ten days of August, while Brecht’s Three Penny Opera will be presented from the 12-16 July by the BA Orchestra, conducted by Peter Müller, with actors from the Cairo Opera company.
Also from 20 July- 20 August, the Plaza of Civilizations at the BA is hosting the Salvador Dali Centenary Exhibition, commemorating100 years since the birth of the Spanish surreal artist. The exhibition is held in cooperation with the Spanish Embassy. Salvador Dali (1904- 1989) was born in Figueras, Spain and would later spend most of his life in France and the US. By 1929 Dali was already famous for what any art connoisseur would immediately recognize as the imprint of Dali -- burning giraffes and melting watches, being his rendition of the world of the unconscious recalled during our dreams.
