TWAS 16th General Meeting at the BA

Alexandria, 29 November 2005—Under the auspices of President Hosni Mubarak, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting the Arab Regional Office of the Academy of Science for the Developing World (TWAS) 16th General Meeting, 30 November – 3 December 2005.
The meeting brings together scientists and specialists in education, science and technology to discuss a number of issues concerning science and technology in the developing countries. These issues are highlighted in lectures, panels of discussions, workshops and roundtable discussions.
Lectures presented in the meeting include: Science and technology development in the Arab World; Biodiversity, sustainability, and developing countries; New initiatives in promoting science education and research in developing countries; Science in Egypt and the Ancient Library of Alexandria and other lectures by TWAS prize awardees in chemistry, astronomy, physics, biology and environment.
The workshops taking place during the meeting open the discussions on social sciences and economics, biotechnology for developing countries, and the International Year of Physics: the TWAS Perspective.
It is worth noting that TWAS-ARO was launched at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), 2-3 June 2005, based upon the meetings, that took place during the launching, several recommendations and proposals arose, among which are the promotion of public awareness and appreciation of science; the creation of networks of excellence within the region and with Arab scientists abroad; the support of the new generation of scientists and the linking between young scientists and former generations; the propagation of excellence and ethics in science, and last but not least, the proclamation of an Arab Nobel Laureate working in the region, within the next 10 years.
