Cognex (tacrine). Prevents the breakdown
of acetylcholine in the brain. Note: Cognex is still available but no longer
actively marketed by the manufacturer. Ebixa (Memantine). Believed to work
by regulating glutamate. Resveratrol (trans-3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene). Not
licensed. A naturally occurring polyphenol mainly found in grapes and red
wine, markedly lowers the levels of secreted and intracellular amyloid
peptides produced from different cell lines. Resveratrol does not inhibit
amyloid production, having no effect on the amyloid producing enzymes - and
-secretases. It promotes the intracellular degradation of A via a mechanism
that involves the proteasome. See J Biol Chem 280: 37377-37382, 2005. COMMON SIDE EFFECTS include dizziness, headache, constipation, confusion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, upset stomach, muscle weakness, possible liver damage. None with NSAIDs medication (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen can also cause stomach ulcers. Nueroprotectors include antioxidants, vitamin E, selegiline, nonsteroid, antiinflamatories, estrogens, testosterone, propentofiline, idebenone, extracts of the chinese tree Ginkgo biloba, Huperzia serrata, ALCAR, acetyl-L-carnitina HCl, neotrofine, nimodipine, cerebrilisine, linopiridine, melatonine and others. |
