The Commonwealth government has committed itself to a partnership with the State and territory governments, ATSIC and NACCHO (the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations peak body). The so-called “Framework Agreements” provide the framework for a collaborative approach to addressing Indigenous health needs, involving government and community organisations, and provide for a partnership approach to planning and priority setting.

A National Council of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health has been established to mobilise leadership and support coordination at the national level. The council has a mandate to comment on federal, state and local government responsibilities.
