The IDB Prizes for Science and Technology, 11th Edition (1434H- 2013G)

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) announces the eleventh edition of its Prizes for Science and Technology (1434H-2013G).

The IDB established the Prizes in 1422H (2001G) to acknowledge and encourage the achievements of the scientific institutions.

These Prizes are annually awarded to institutions in IDB Member Countries in the following three categories:

Category-1: Outstanding scientific or technological contribution to the socio-economic development of a member country.
Category-2: Outstanding contribution to any of the scientific disciplines of engineering, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, information technology, optronics, material sciences, pharmaceutical, industrial microelectronics, nanotechnology and alternative energy sources.
Category-3: Noted scientific research institutions in IDB least developed member countries (LDMCs).

Each winner receives a cash reward of USD 100,000 along with a trophy and a certificate.

Applications are invited from public or private national, regional and international academic or research or development institutions in IDB Member Countries. Applicants can fill in an electronic version of the application form on the IDB website www.isdb.org , following the posted guidelines and sending the completed application to STPrize1434@isdb.org

The completed forms, along with any attachments, should be received by the IDB Science and Technology and Technical Cooperation Division or at one of the IDB Regional Offices no later than 29 Dhul-Qa'dah 1433H (15 October 2012G).

Two independent committees from outside the Bank will select the Winners which will be rewarded during the 38th Board of IDB Governors Meeting scheduled to take place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan from 11-12 Rajab 1434H (21-22 May 2013G).

TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012
Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region

Knowing the scarcity of water in the Arab region,and the problems the region will face in case no new efficient and effective techniques were developed in the field of water resources management, TWAS-ARO chose the theme of "Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region" for the Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012.

The prize will be awarded to a young scientist from the Arab region who conducted innovative or pioneer researches on water resources management in the Middle East, covering topics such as:

  • Outstanding achievements in the construction or improvement of water and waste disposal projects serving the financially needy communities in developing countries.
  • The impact of climate change on water scarcity in North Africa and the Middle East.
  • Lowering the cost of desalination technology and working in new techniques to make the process of resolving long term water scarcity needs in the Middle East and North Africa more affordable.


The value of the prize is 3,000 USD.

Eligibility:
Applicants must:
1. Be Natives of an Arab country.
2. Be Living and working in an Arab country.
3. Hold a PhD.
4. Have a proven track record in his/her field. 5. Be under 40 years old by 1 January 2012.

Themes:
The course will focus on the following topics:
  • The interaction between the economy and the natural environment: market failure and government intervention
  • Economic analysis of the optimal use of natural resources following the basic distinction between renewable and non-renewable resources
  • Pollution as an external effect of production and/or consumption: instruments to internalise the related social costs (standards, taxes, emission permits,....)
  • Conflict on natural resources' use: relative and absolute scarcity-limits to growth (example: land, water)
  • Methods to assess the "value" of environmental goods and services for which market prices are incorrect or do not exist
  • Growth sustainability
  • National environmental accounts- National indicators of resource use, environmental quality and sustainability
  • Developed and less developed countries' relation-international treaties.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, announces the call for applications for the Educational Institute for Responsible Research on Infectious Diseases: Ensuring Safe Science in the 21st Century.

The Institute will take place in Aqaba, Jordan during 8 to 13 September 2012. It aims to develop a network of faculty in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region able to teach issues related to research with dual use potential by using tenets of responsible science and active learning pedagogical techniques.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be faculty who have been working and living in Egypt, Yemen, Algeria or Abu Dhabi and should apply in teams of 2-3 from each institution.
  • Applicants must stay for the entire institute from 8 to 13 September 2012.
  • Applicants must agree to use one or more of the instructional materials developed at the Institute in their teaching, preferably in the fall semester 2012.
  • It is expected that one member/team will participate in the follow-up evaluation meeting during the academic year 2012-2013.

The 2012 L'OREAL-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowships-Call for Applications

The L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships program was one of the first pioneering regional programs aiming towards recognizing Arab women scientists' achievements. Following the success of the L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships For Women in Science, the program has been expanded in 2011 to include candidates from 17 Arab countries to further celebrate the phenomenal achievements of the region's women scientists.

In 2012 L'Oreal and UNESCO, for the third year of the program, will grant 10 fellowships to 10 exceptional scientists from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, the Sultanate of Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, U.A.E. and Yemen.

Each Fellow will receive 20,000 USD in recognition of her contribution to the advancement of science and to further progress her career.
