Historical Sources in the Hellenistic Period

Objective: The course aims to introduce the historical sources of the Hellenistic era. As these sources include literary sources, reports of travelers, historians and geographers, as well as archaeological remains, such as inscriptions, ostraca, papyrus, coins, and monumental buildings.

Content: The course introduces students to information about the importance of archeology as a basic historical source in the study and comparison of archaeological remains from the Hellenistic era, and how these sources agree with literary sources, and accordingly many topics can be studied, such as public and private life, identity, religion, and the economy through the intertwining of political and cultural life in the Hellenistic era.
