The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies in Cooperation with University College London, UK Presents a Conference on Alexandria and Other Centers of Thought in Ancient Egypt.

This conference on Alexandria and other centers of thought in ancient Egypt was organized by prof.  Mervat Abdel Nasser and was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 10& 11 Dec.2009.

The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies in collaboration with Dr. Kyriakos Savvopoulos organized the 1st Hellenistic Studies Workshop, 12 July 2009 and came to a successful end on the 18 July  2009. Of the center’s aims at its establishment in November 2008 was to go International and increase the awareness of the Hellenistic culture around the world.

Mr. Kyriakos Savvopoulos, currently a researcher at The Alexandria and  Mediterranean Research Centre and future lecturer in The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies, will be presenting an enlightening overview of the Greco-Egyptian interaction in Alexandria during the Hellenistic period. Since its foundation by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria was inhabited by different ethnic groups such as Greeks, Egyptians, Jews and Syrians who coexisted and interacted with one another resulting in a multicultural society. This is evidently reflected in the material culture of the city.

Inauguration of the Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies
and of the Exhibition Approaching Heaven with Icons of the Velimezis Collection and the Benaki Museum
 
Thursday November 27, 2008 The inaugural ceremony of The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Hall . The inauguration was held under the auspices of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Egypt’s First Lady. This opening ceremony included an  “Approaching Heaven” exhibition from the Velimezis Collection of Post- Byzantine Icons which is under the auspices of  H.E. Dr. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic.
