22 February 2009

Our meeting started with Dr. Ahmed Al Awady, a member of the International Relations Committee in the Friends of the Library Association, gave a presentation about the upcoming event “Alexandria international festival”. He introduced different activities of the friends of the library association and then he explained the themes and aims of the “Alexandria International Festival”. Then, he invited the LYM youth to participate in a brainstorming session that aims at coming up with new ideas and activities to be carried out during the event. Then, Mrs. Layla Abdel Hady moderated the discussion that followed the announcement.

Then, Assem Habashi, champion of Alexandria University chess competition (2008–2009) started the workshop “Chess, The Way to Professional Play”. The workshop consisted of three parts. Assem Habashi tackled different tactics commonly used in the game such as forks and skewers. Then, he gave a presentation through which he shed light on some historical episodes that have to do with chess and he mentioned a number of famous quotes and songs the theme of which is chess. Moreover, he tackled the different attempts of computing chess until “Deeper Blue” beat Garry Kasparov, the World champion.  He then mentioned some predictions made about the future of chess and the fears that artificial intelligence would soon jeopardize the law of supremacy of the human brain over the machine. We do hope that all who attended the workshop have benefited from it.

After that, Salah El-Din Adel gave a presentation about the “Future City Competition” which targets students of the faculty of engineering. The students are required to design a city using a certain computer game, to make a maquette of this city, write an assay describing it and then present their work.

We are sorry to announce that next Sunday’s meeting is canceled because the ‘Arab Reform Forum’ will be held at that time. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, March 8, 2009.
