Abees Building renovation
17 July 2009 - 30 September 2009

Steps of the project:

  1. Selection of the village and the house
Many visits were paid to houses in different poor villages surrounding Alexandria to study their state, ( Abees 2 , Abees4/4 and Abees 4/8 ). A house in Abees 4/8 was chosen, Its owner was a widow woman Who works at a factory and has 2 daughters, One of which is handicapped and their grandmother lived with them.
  2. Diagnosed the problems of the house
The house needed renovation of the roof, the walls, heavy repairs and isolation to reinforce it. It also needed windows for better ventilation and Stairs construction. The washing room was with no lavatory. Poultry had no cage or place for them, they move free within the home and the room for cattle, A new room was reconstructed separate from the house for all the animals. The whole village suffered from unawareness about principals of hygiene, nutrition and education .
  3. Formation of working groups
Presentations explaining the project were made in the YESBU and LYM weekly meetings in order to motivate youth to participate in this project. Youth were divided into two groups, one for the architectural renovation and another one for the educational, medical and environmental awareness campaigns.
  • Architectural group
A group of 25 students and 2 supervisors from the Faculty of Fine Arts-University of Alexandria was composed in order to work on the renovation of the house. They worked on repairing all the architectural needs of the house: the roof, the window and the walls. They completed the stairs reaching the house and opened a window to ensure good ventilation of the house.

  • Awareness campaigns
Several awareness campaigns were organized each Friday, a campaign about personal hygiene and its importance was carried in which Hand washing to prevent infection, brushing teeth were explained. Another Campaign was about Avian flu and the precautions that should be taken for contacting with poultry. A third one was an Environmental awareness campaign explaining the rational use of water in agriculture and the safe household disposal of wastes was conducted .
These awareness campaign ran parallel with the renovation of the house to benefit of the good relationship with the habitants of the village which was created during all this.
