To coincide with the two hundred year anniversary of Mohamed Ali’s succession to power in Egypt, the Egyptian Higher Council for Culture and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina held a three day international conference on Mohamed Ali and the World, from 15–17 November 2005. A wide variety of international speakers gave lectures on different aspects of Mohamed Ali’s contribution to Egypt’s nineteenth century renaissance, including how the ruler’s actions were to have consequences far beyond Egyptian borders.
