Environmental factors in the early stages of life are important in the pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes among offspring of mothers who have diabetes while bearing the child is much higher than among offspring of mothers who were not diabetic at the time of pregnancy but later developed diabetes (Pre-diabetic), or in those whose mothers never developed diabetes (Non-diabetic). The large differences in the prevalence rates of diabetes in the offspring suggests that the intrauterine environment has profound effects on the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
