Twins and singletons differ in gestational duration and size at birth. A crude comparison of overall mortality levels during infancy would blur the many facets of differences between twins and singletons. A more  thorough comparison should take into account these differences. It should shed light on the comparability between twins and singletons. For instance: Is the ideal gestational duration shorter in twins than in singletons? Should pre-term delivery be defined separately for them?
