In late pregnancy the growth of twins is more likely to be limited by physical constraints in utero and placental function. In the first two semesters, when the fetuses are relatively small and require less nutritional supply, these limitations are not obvious.

Still, one possibility that cannot be excluded is a selection bias, i.e. growth restricted twins may stay longer in utero. Future research using longitudinal fetal growth monitoring is required to examine this possibility.
